Twice he led expeditions to within 100 miles of the South Pole, only to realize his men could not survive the "final degree." Both times, he ended the effort -- putting his men's lives before glory.

Preparing for Extreme Adventures

Thorough preparation - especially where it concerns safety - is critical to all our Extreme Adventures. The bulk of that preparation falls on our shoulders, but you must do some of it as well. These are serious expeditions. Carefully compare romance to reality. Think objectively about the challenges you want to face versus your capabilities.

To help you determine the adventure that's right for you, Abercrombie & Kent has developed a system to rate the conditions on each program: temperature extremes, weather, altitude, and other factors that you must overcome to complete your expedition. These indicators will help you choose and prepare accordingly.

Carefully select your equipment. Modern equipment is lightweight, durable, and can withstand all the environmental conditions you will face. It is imperative that you bring equipment and clothing that meets the rating requirements. For our Arctic and Antarctic programs, you will be able to rent cold-weather gear for the extreme weather conditions.

You must also assess your own strengths and limitations. In many cases, you will need to attain -- even prove -- a certain level of fitness in order to meet the program's challenges. Also, some of these programs are designed for small groups of people who know each other, such as friends, family and close colleagues. Be sure to choose appropriate travelling partners, people who you know well and can rely on when the going gets tough.

Everyone who participates in an A&K Extreme Adventure will have medical evacuation insurance, and will be covered by our company's global reach to make sure that your expedition is successful and safe.

Extreme Adventures 4-Point Scale

4 - SEVERE

These programs take place in the most inhospitable places on earth and entail prolonged strenuous activity. Superior physical and mental condition is required to participate.

3 - DEMANDING

These programs take place in remote environments or require prolonged activity such as rafting, horseback riding and hiking. Participants should be in good physical condition and able to "rough it" for long periods.

2 - MODERATE

These programs take place in environments with potentially extreme temperatures, and may include light physical activity.

1 - MILD

These programs make no physical demands on the participant.
